I first thought that the problem was caused by the backup file being too big. Another error indicated that WhatsApp should be active in the target phone, when it was already activated. One error/tip asked me to disable Find My iPhone, which I did. This time the error messages were more informative, but weird or not real. I tried also first making a local backup from one phone to the computer and then restoring/merging a few chats in the other phone, which again did not work. It installed fine, but when I tried to transfer and merge chats directly between two iPhones it failed after many attempts, showing at the end an "unsolvable error" message.
